Self-care is a word that evokes strong emotions. Either it resonates with you or elicits scorn directed at the poor soul who dares suggest that it could be the balm for what ails you. Unfortunately, many people think self-care is only for the privileged few. Some hold disdain for the idea that self-care will improve the health of Black people in a world filled with systemic oppression and daily microaggressions.
As a Black female Physician, I believe in radical self-care. Radical self-care goes beyond the occasional bubble bath or spa day. It encompasses a holistic and intentional approach to self-nurturing. It requires me to cultivate a deep understanding of my needs and be committed to fulfilling them. Radical self-care involves making deliberate choices that prioritize my mental, emotional, and physical well-being, even if it means setting boundaries or saying no to others. Radical self-care is reflected in every decision that I make. Not relegated to a once-a-month spa visit. Radical self-care acknowledges that taking care of myself is not a luxury but a necessity.
In today’s hustle and grind world, caring for ourselves often takes a back seat to everything else. Instead, we prioritize our work, relationships, and other responsibilities while neglecting the essential elements of our well-being.
Neglecting ourselves has severe consequences on our health. Chronic stress, anxiety, and fatigue lead to disease and poor health. Conversely, prioritizing self-care enhances our ability to manage stress, strengthen our emotional well-being, and improve our overall quality of life.
Physical well-being forms the foundation of our overall health. Radical self-care encourages us to prioritize activities that promote physical wellness. This includes being intentional about nourishing our bodies, exercising regularly, drinking water, and getting sufficient sleep. Radical self-care reminds us that our bodies deserve care and attention, thus enabling us to lead vibrant, active lives.
Emotional well-being is crucial for our overall health. Radical self-care through journaling, therapy, meditation, or time in nature strengthens mental and emotional well-being.
Radical self-care recognizes the importance of setting boundaries. So often, we find ourselves overwhelmed by the demands of others, leaving little time for self-care. Setting clear boundaries and learning to say no without guilt protects our energy and ensures our needs are met. Radical self-care teaches us that it’s not selfish to prioritize ourselves; instead, it is essential for our well-being.
Radical self-care holds even greater significance for marginalized populations who often face systemic challenges and endure weathering. Weathering refers to the cumulative impact of social, economic, and environmental stressors on the health of individuals from marginalized communities. For example, discrimination, racism, poverty, and limited access to resources lead to chronic stress, heightened mental health issues, and physical health disparities.
Audre Lorde, a renowned writer, poet, and activist, made significant contributions to the concept of self-care and its importance. Lorde emphasized the transformative power of self-care in the face of systemic oppression and marginalization. She recognized that caring for oneself in a society that often devalues and disregards the needs of marginalized individuals is a radical act of survival.
In a world that prioritizes productivity over personal well-being, embracing radical self-care is a revolutionary act.
By engaging in radical self-care practices, we counteract the effects of weathering, nurture our physical and mental health, and reclaim agency over our lives. When used to break free from the cycle of stress, burnout, and neglect, radical self-care becomes a powerful tool for healing, resistance, and empowerment. It is another way to navigate and resist oppressive systems.
Remember that taking care of ourselves is not a luxury; it is an essential and transformative act. Whether you want to be healthy and live your best life simply because you deserve it or if you want to engage more powerfully in activism and social change, radical self-care is for you.
Practicing radical self-care not only benefits us individually but also creates a positive ripple effect. When we prioritize our well-being, we inspire and empower those around us to do the same. By modeling self-care behaviors, we cultivate a culture of well-being and change the world. Holistic well-being and liberation of yourself, your family, and your community starts with you.
